I continued west from Puerto Rico through the Dominican Republic and Haiti before reaching Cuba.

Dominican Republic

From Puerto Rico the route crossed to the Dominican Republic, with me reaching Casa de Campo before continuing west along Hispaniola.

Haiti — Île-à-Vache

Île-à-Vache was a particularly memorable stop. This is the poorest county I have ever visited. Local sailing boats were still an everyday means of transport and boats were being built ashore using traditional hand tools. The visit provided a glimpse of village life very different from the more developed Caribbean islands.

From Île-à-Vache the next major destination was Cuba.
