Malua on the Tiber
We moored Malua at Fiumicino in the mouth of the Tiber and spent fourteen days travelling into Rome. The river itself was not an attractive berth, but it gave us a base from which to explore the city one section at a time.
Fourteen days in Rome
The bus into the city could be an experience, while the Metro was much easier. Rome was overwhelming in its scale and history, so rather than rush from one famous sight to another we concentrated on a different part of the city each day.
There were some magical moments: looking towards St Peter’s through the famous keyhole, looking down into the basilica from the top of the dome, the Campidoglio, Villa Borghese and the extraordinary collections scattered throughout the city.
Ostia Antica
One of the stand-out excursions was Ostia Antica. The extensive Roman ruins made it possible to imagine the old port city rather than just look at isolated monuments. After two weeks, however, it was time to leave the Tiber and sail south along the Italian coast towards Sicily.
