Exploring oceans, islands and coastlines — sharing our voyages, experiences and the places Malua has sailed.

Gippsland Lakes 2022

After the COVID restrictions, Malua needed a haul-out and fresh antifouling. I booked the Bullock Island slip at Lakes Entrance and sailed south from Bermagui. It was as much a maintenance mission as a cruise.

South to Lakes Entrance

The route passed Eden and Green Cape, then Gabo Island and the long coast of Ninety Mile Beach. An easterly swell reflected from the shore and made the first part uncomfortable. A strong wind warning ruled out my intended rest at Gabo, so I kept going towards Lakes Entrance.

The entrance is difficult to pick out from offshore along the unbroken sand coast. I used the chartplotter, waypoints and depth contours to locate the bar and enter the Gippsland Lakes. The purpose of the visit was to clean the growth from Malua’s hull and renew her antifouling before more cruising.
